The Sixx Mixx was my LIVE 105 radio show which ran from June 27, 2003 to Dec. 30, 2005, airing Fridays at 6:00pm, pretty much every week. In honor of its 10th anniversary, starting in 2013, I remastered the original (pre-air) shows and posted them here along with track listings and some additional commentary and context, plus totally accurate quality scores for each episode (except guest mixes) to help guide your listening. When I could find them, I included the on-air recording as well, which is nice cause of the air-chain compression and sizzle, as well as some fun IDs (mostly voiced by LIVE 105 ad sales queen Mary Nite). The best part for me is the delightful intro jibber jabber of myself and Jared the DJ, which endlessly infuriated our PD at the time Sean Demery, who would beg us to just get to the music ("I can feel people tuning out the longer you talk!") which of course was 100% accurate but just made us want to talk more stupidly and longer.
Commentary: So, yeah, the main "remastered" download above is just the entirety of American Edit, and the broadcast version is the recording of the airing (minus the mid-set commercial break). If you listen to that, you can hear me awkwardly talk around ownership of the thing, which is kinda dumb, but I was walking a very thin line there, posting stuff online illegally while legitimizing and publicizing it on LIVE 105 (who wished to continue a good relationship with Green Day). So kudos to them for letting me play the whole thing. As far as commentary goes, jeez, my opinion of American Edit, 10 years later? Oy vey. Honestly, at the time, I really did like it, and I still do. It's helped for me by the fact that I have basically 3 and maybe 1/8 mashups of my own on it (Dr. Who, Boulevard, Novocaine, and I helped with American Jesus). Team9 did the heavy lifting, producing all the other tracks, and I really think they're stellar, especially the opener which is a rollicking tour de force of sampladelic mayhem. To me, the whole thing was both a joke and not a joke, a weird combo of parody and tribute and rebuke and makeover, and I still hear that now, listening to it. Yeah it's sloppy at points (and we were both so overwhelmed and hurried and busy that we finished everything as mp3s not even as waves so there's no like "clean" classic version to even remaster and share) and it's not like it ever got Grey Album notoriety (nor was it much like that album at all, which to my mind was a sort of DJ Shadow-style re-edit of The Beatles on which Jay-Z was kind of superfluous although awesome-sounding). But I feel proud of this little album, so much of it still makes me laugh (the hand wielding a mouse instead of a grenade on the cover is like, the best idea I've ever had) and even though Team9 and I have yet to meet in person (Australia's so far!) Travis Morrison - What's Your Fantasy Commentary: It's hard now to really remember how dark things were in the summer of 2004, in terms of politics/war/etc. The Iraq War had metastasized into a full-fledged seemingly intractable insurgency with no end in sight. Abu Ghraib had just come to light, appearing to confirm in gruesome detail that the entire war was some sort of horrific Milgram experiment in torture and dehumanization. And in response, the Bush administration shamelessly sputtered out lie after lie, like a desperate child caught breaking a rule, except with a vocabulary that increasingly took on sickening wafts of Orwellian doublespeak. I know that for me at the time, layering Bush's speeches over this majestic Faithless song felt cathartic and important and urgent. I think that's partially why I never settled on one "version" of the track idea, continually shifting elements around and rearranging the clips every time I included it, as it never felt like I ever quite achieved what the moment demanded. Excavating which version is which and which is the best could take a lifetime, so let's just say another version opens Sixx Mixx 51, and it's okay. Moving along, the stretch through EMF nearly matches Sixx Mixx 49 as a fast-paced hip-hop-tempo set, even if it uses some of the same old elements. Of course, 7 Nation Army has to make another appearance (at the end of this project I'll be counting up tracks to see what the most played songs were over the course of the show, but let me just say that this is the 14th episode in which 7 Nation Army appears in some form or another). It's almost excused by the inclusion of the Metallica remix, which layers perfectly over the White Stripes. After that things sort of fall apart and get super sloppy but at least in a kind of funny way, ending on Travis Morrison's silly cover of Ludacris. All in all, an entertaining show.
